A vegan lifestyle is a way of living that seek to exclude, as far as is possible and practical, all forms of exploitation of animals for food, clothing or any other purpose. Share advice and support for those who are or are becoming vegan.

GROUP MESSAGES:

I just found an interesting recipe for vegan shampoo. Has anyone ever tried this? I use Dr. Bronners, but it seems like it might be too harsh for hair.

It may be worth having a look on the website for Faith in Nature (www.faithinnature.co.uk) or similar. Unlike traditional cosmetic sites, they are happy to give away some of the 'secrets' of their ingredients and why they are used. Perhaps there will be some handy tips there?

Just for the sake of information too, it might be worth remembering that hair is a self-cleansing mechanism. There have been attempts by the cosmetics industry to debunk this idea, but many vegans have found it to be true. I haven't used shampoo, conditioner, etc. on my hair for almost 25 years and it seems fine! It takes 6-8 weeks for the hair oils to rebalance, and it does need to be rinsed through very thoroughly in bearably hot water every day. Unfortunately that's about not just the build-up of natural oils in the hair, but also the air it's often subjected to now!

If there's any sign of dandruff, dermatitis or anything else, a wash through with hot water and rosemary and tea tree essential oils usually works well. But you have to put up with a little oiliness until the hair and scalp return to normal - but this is just a body that we reside in, after all, not our true nature!

Hope this helps.

what a great find this shampoo was. I also tried it with Mint instead of parsley. Great on both count.
