Ubuntu for all

I was pleasantly surprised this morning while reading this months issue of ODE Magazine. I thought to myself, "hmm... maybe I should write an article about Linux operating systems (Ubuntu/Kubuntu) and open source software and the free software movement", when I turned the page to find "Ubuntu for all".

A wonderful little article, but not what I expected being the closet geek that I am. There is a parallel here though. Ubuntu, as the article says, means "I am because you are." The article goes on to describe African democracy.

The parallel: Ubuntu, in the computer world, is a version of linux operating systems which is built using free and open source software. Free as in freedom and, more than likely, free as in no cost. Ubuntu is "Linux for human beings".

The Ubuntu philosophy:

  1. Every computer user should have the freedom to download, run, copy, distribute, study, share, change and improve their software for any purpose, without paying licensing fees.
  2. Every computer user should be able to use their software in the language of their choice.
  3. Every computer user should be given every opportunity to use software, even if they work under a disability.

Using a Ubuntu/linux based computer is my way of sticking it to the man. I have everything I need to be productive without being tied to a corporation or paying licensing fees.

So if you are feeling like a slave to the system and would like to have more freedom and choice then check out Ubuntu, linux for human beings.
