Over 13 million pledge to fight poverty
13.23 million people joined the Stand Up And Take Action mobilization in Bangladesh by pledging to fight against poverty. The mobilization is in accordance with the Millennium Developmental Goals.
Most notable was the diversity of the group. People came from all walks of life to take a stand against poverty. This includes, political leaders, athletes, artists, teachers and students. The campaign was promoted in 60,000 schools around the country. A children's rally was also organized at Bangladesh Sishu Academy as well. Many children joined to rally against poverty.
Popular singers and cricket players are promoting the cause as well to try to bring India up to international standards. Many other programs and events are taking place in Bangladesh to spread awareness.
The cause is already seeing results in small villages like Badarpur, which is just 10 km from the capital city, but almost inaccessible on roads. The predominately Muslim village has no basic facilities, and has decided to focus on educating their children. About 100 children are now enrolled in a new school to study Hindi and English.
