Luxembourg provides a simple way to bike around town
Sharing is caring, especially when it comes to bikes - environmentally friendly and perfect for a quick pop to just about any shop in the 2,586 sq km Luxembourg. Recently the country's namesake capital, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, has shot for a unique way to bring two-wheelers to the streets with their new bike sharing system, vel'oh! With the options of a 7-day or a long-term pass, the company has 25 bike stations in place all over the city, about 300 to 400 meters apart, and has 250 bikes already hitting the roads.
Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, vel'oh! ranks high on Europe's quality of bike sharing services compared with city's like the mostly flat Barcelona where their bike share system, Barcelona's Bicing Service, which has just about 30,000 subscribers in a city of 1.6 million. Luxembourg City, with a population of 76,200 has 2,030 yearly subscribers and a daily use of just over 400 per day, and has only been up since March 2008. That's a 10 percent group quite comparable to other bike share systems. Designed for those above the age of 14, vel'oh! ensures a comfortable journey with its 3 gear unisex ride. It's a much more convenient way to get around the city without having to sit in traffic or search endlessly for a parking spot, which is too far from your destination to have driven anyway. With a mission to get people from place to place affordably and without polluting the environment, vel'oh! seems to be right on track!
