Butterfly Evolves Overnight -- So Are We!

The biggest story of hope for humans hit the news a few days ago. The Blue Moon butterfly on Somoa went from virtually extinct (down to 1% male population due to survival crisis) back up to 40% in less than one year! (Stay with me here...)

Scientists baffled, say it typically takes hundreds or thousands of years for evolution of this kind to happen (www.nzherald.co.nz/section/story.cfm?c_id=39&objectid=10451669&pnum=2). So here we have the Blue Moon butterfly making a quantum accelerated evolutionary leap in the blink of an eye!!

(Juicy part here) We humans are in the midst of a similar evolutionary leap, due to a crisis of our own. Can you feel it happening? If you're reading this I'll bet you can. Will we fare as well as the Blue Moon? Time will tell ...

Because a resistance to a bacteria is developed, are we willing to call that evolution? Do we call it evolution when humans develop a resistance to antibiotics?

It is ridiculous to think that this resistance can be called evolution at all. The animals of the earth reproduce after their kind. There is no evidence of any macro evolution at all. If there was, the earth's crust would be replete with unsuccessfully evolved "half" creatures and it is not. Of course an animal can change, there are 100s of breeds of dogs, yet they are all dogs.

Science is grasping at straws. The same kind of straws that were being grasped when science refused to believe the earth was round or that the earth was not the center of the universe or any of the other beliefs that the mankind has had to learn, accept and overcome.

I don't know whether this is truly an example of evolutionary change or not, but perhaps the point is that we must always have hope - that positive change can happen. And yet we must also plan and take responsibility for our actions. Unlike butterflies, humans do have the power to recognize when our behavior is destructive and to change it. We do not need to rely upon evolution for each of us to commit to working for peace and ecological sustainability. Our culture is perpetuating self-destructive behavior, so it is high time that "liberals" and "conservatives" stopped fighting with each other and saw that creating a compassionate and safe world depends upon cooperation and shared values. Only fools fight in a burning house.
